I have noted that the detached panel of the TM-D700 is very similar in shape to the RC-2000 remote control system.
Asking Kenwood about compatibility, I received the following answer (very quick reply, congratulations to Kenwood Customer Service):
"Dear Kenwood Customer:
Owners of the Kenwood TS-2000 series radio may want to acquire the optional RC-2000 detachable face for mobile operation. The Kenwood TM-D700A transceiver detachable front face is compatible with radio models mentioned above. TM-D700A radios with serial numbers 212XXXXX or above will work as a remote display with the TS-2000 series without modification. TM-D700A radios with serial numbers 211XXXXX and below will require modification.
Due to the required parts and service cables needed, modifications can only be performed at one of our factory service centers. The cost will be $65.00 plus return shipping costs.The RC-2000 kit comes with RF chokes that are attached on each end of the control cable. If you use the TM-D700A detachable front face to control the TS-2000, with a standard control cable PLEASE use optional RF Choke/Toroid Cores. Wrap it around the control cable on each end to eliminate any stray RF interference to the control panel.
You can obtain RF Chokes/Toroid Cores from MFJ or Radio Shack.
